Why Does a Console Switch Need a Real-Time Clock?

The ability to accurately record the time and date is a vital feature for console switch products. When reviewing alarm records or scheduling actions, it’s extremely important to know that the console switch has accurately and reliably recorded the correct time and date. Without the correct date and time, much of the data that is recorded by a console switch can often be rendered more or less useless; if you don’t know exactly when a recorded event took place, it’s difficult to use that data for troubleshooting or scheduling purposes.

WTI’s TSM and RSM series console switch products include a real-time clock and calendar, which can be configured to update from NTP servers, ensuring that the time values shown on event records are as accurate as possible. The real-time clock and calendar can be set to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), adjusted to fit your particular time zone or configured to compensate for Daylight Savings Time. When properly configured, the console switch will regularly check the NTP server and readjust its internal clock as needed. This ensures that the time values that are used for scheduling purposes and the time values that appear in event log records are always accurate and reliable.

The ability to remotely access command functions on network equipment via console switch is a crucial element of every system administrator’s job, but its equally important to know that when you review event records or set up scheduled actions on a console switch, that the time values that you depend on are always as accurate and reliable as possible.
