Whats in a date
9/9/2009, 9/22/2009, 10/22/2009, rumor is maybe sometime in September or maybe in January or maybe never at all.
Any of these dates mean anything to you? If you needed to plan something which of the dates above would you like to have?
Product announcements are tricky and a black science. If you are a business, the choice is clear you would love to have hard dates to plan on and to schedule budgets and resources for. If you are a consumer, the choice from the seller point of view is whether you want to build excitement and intrigue.
9/9/2009 is the release day for Beatles RockBand, 9/22/2009 is the release day for Halo ODST, 10/22/2009 is the Consumer release date of Windows 7, the other dates are an iPod announcement, MAC OS 10.6 and the Apple Tablet product.
Obviously Apple is the master of pent up excitement. No wonder they have made no corporate in roads all their business is consumer. On the other hand if they gave a heads up on new iPods being released they would not mess with their customer happiness when they just found out the iPod they bought doesn’t have a camera, like the new shiny one.
