Black Friday
In case you didn’t know The Black Hat Conference is in Las Vegas this week. It used to be an underground conference of security hacks for computer systems. Its a little more commercial now, but still informative and entertaining.
Why bother me with this you might say, its just a bunch of hackers goofing around. well, not really. Out of this conference comes security patches from everything from cell phones, computer systems, parking meters and picture frames.
They post most of their presentations online along with video and audio of the presentations.
Probably one of the biggest news items coming from the show is the ability to hack into your phone with an SMS message. The focus is on the Apple iPhone but it really affects any SMS message type of smart phone.
We see the type of Smart Card Parking meters used by San Francisco was hacked, being able to include an unlimited ($999.99) amount of parking funds. Just on a side note, I once bought a swipe card reader on eBay for ten dollars. It can read most credits cards, although all the information is encrypted on these cards, your zip code is not, which is why when you have your credit card is stolen the most common destination for the thief is the gas station, where they only need to enter your zip code to fill up.
Please remember, if your device can be used online, nothing is safe.
Even the Invisible iPhone can be hacked.
I bet there is a line at the Apple store already.
sigh
