Be Frugal in the Distortion Field
Yea, I admit it. I am affected by the reality distortion field. The new iPhone is rumored to be released during next weeks WWDC (I don’t think they would let me attend because I am not hip enough) by Apple and probably a few other surprises as well. Not that I can afford to buy any of these, you see I am married.
A couple of money saving notes at the end of this long week, if you are buying a secure certificate for a server you don’t need to go to VeriSign and pay $399 (USD) for a one year license, you can go to Thawte and get the same thing for $249 (USD). What I hear all the time is Verisign is more secure and they are guaranteed to be around forever. What most people don’t know is that VeriSign bought Thawte a few years back and they are actually they same company ! So don not waste that extra $150 dollar on nothing.
Another dig, if you are registering a one yearly domain name through Network Solutions it will cost you $34.99 (USD) per year, go over to GoDaddy.com you can get the same thing at $9.99 (USD) per year. They have a goofy web site but they have been around forever and they are very strong. This came up because we have been having login problems with Network Solutions to change some nameserver settings and it has been a nightmare.
If you need free SSL Server Certificates for some development sites or internal web sites, go over to cacert.org, they will issue free certificates to your domain, but they are not natively recognized by IE or FireFox, you need to add them by hand to your browser. A Good bargain none the less for a site you are running by yourself.
Talking about Firefox, RC2 was released this week, along with speculation that the general release will be sometime in June.
With your saved money from domain registrations/SSL registrations you can get your son or daughter one of these Oregon Scientific ATC3K video cameras to put on the handle bars of their bike.
This is not tech or anything, but these FoxTails for Phys Ed are great, we were playing with them at my daughter’s school Open House night. I actually ordered one.
Later.
