No one is going to read this anyway

Since is this is the first (and hopefully not the last depending on management) and no one EVER read first posts of a new blog anyway. Let get some history out of the way.

I have been working at WTI on and off for over 20 years. I am a Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Blackberry, Web, iPhone, Windows mobile user. Although depending on the particular day, not in that order of importance. I am not an expert in any thing, but delve enough into the every aspect of computers and electronic gizmos that I can give a very informed opinion on things. By day, I call myself a Linux embedded engineer, although that role is ALWAYS supplemented by the importance of the month (i.e. SSL/TLS LDAP, Kerberos and Kerberos over LDAP was the flavor of last month to go into all of our units). In a nutshell my job and hobby are computers and mobile devices.

Now that the boring pieces are out of the way, some random things I think.

Well, I was going to give you a link on the “D Conference” (http://d6.allthingsd.com/), you know that big to do put on by The Wall Street Journal and hosted by Walt Mossberg in Carlsbad, California. Featuring Speakers such as Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, Jerry Yang, Jeff Bezos but it looks like our spam/web filter is saying that particular web site is a porn site (no, I swear its not). Here is the official link (http://d6.allthingsd.com/) with videos and what not. Interesting things shown by the Microsoft gang are the pre-pieces to Windows 7, mostly the “touch” feature (ala Apples’ Multi-Touch feature in the new MacBooks, ). Jeff Bezos (Amazon) is always a good listen. I would love to see Gate/Ballmer/Yang get together and hear Jerry Yang beg for another purchase offer from Microsoft before Carl Icahn comes bearing down with new board members.

Why am I being punished and not able to buy a OLPC PC ? I can buy two and keep on and have one donated to a underprivileged person from Nigeria and have them turn around and send me SPAM to empty my bank account. But I just need to buy one, at the price that they are selling it for (I think its about $200 now). I think they should start with food and water first. I am not a fat cat capitalist, just some average Joe trying to raise his kids and carve out a living. Please don’t punish me because I live in the United States. That goes for you also Microsoft, don’t give away your Operating System and Microsoft Office in Asia for pennies on the dollar and make me pay full price.

The World Wide Developers conference for Apple is the first week in June (I could not scam myself a ticket), it looks like the new iPhone is going to be released. According to shipping waybills, large amount of containers from China are coming in for Apple labeled “Electronic Computers”, its either the new iPhone or some kind of tablet PC they have been talking about for some time.

Oh, yea security, that is suppose to be the whole point of this blog. Well, yea…. I remember September 11, 2001, after that all companies mandated that there has to be secure communications to remote boxes. It’s  funny before that fate, telnet and plain text web was just fine, after that date, it was taboo. This is when the secure push at WTI had started, we switched from home grown solutions to embedded Linux. We are unique among Console Servers and rebooters, in that we design all the things enclosed in the box you buy right here in this building. If I have a question about the hardware I just walk down the hall, no need to make a conference call with eight third party companies. If you have a question you can call our 800 number and you will get Sharon or Mario down the hall, not half way around the world. If there is a security whole found in OpenSSH or we fail a Nessus security attack, we can make the change on the spot and quickly get it out into your hands.

In the coming month I will be able to tell you security nightmares that I have seen from companies in our area that I have picked out without ever leaving my seat. I have contacted many of these companies to fix their glaring Internet Trunk, Wi-Fi, FTP, Telnet, MS-Exchange problems, found not on purpose, but while doing testing on one of our units.

Want to try to bring down a unit out ours ? Goto mpc.wti.com, go head, I dare you.

Hmm, did we tell management we are even doing this blog, oops i might have to check on that.

Later.
